Guimaras under 'state of calamity' due to El Niño

The island province of Guimaras is now under 'state of calamity' due to the El Niño weather phenomenon.

The Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) issued the declaration of the state of calamity based on validation report showing that the phenomenon has caused some damages worth PHP91 million, mostly in rice crops, in the province.

Specifically, 2,721 out of the 4,473 hectares of rice fields were damaged for the second cropping.

Some 409.8 hectares planted with vegetables, tomatoes, corn and banana, among others were also damaged with losses pegged at PHP5 million.

Guimaras Provincial Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) coordinator Terry Siason said that the damages might increase because reports are still coming in although they are yet to be validated.

However, she said that the provincial government has allotted PHP2 million for use as emergency assistance to those who were affected by El Niño.

Part of the budget will be utilized for the 'cash-for-work' program of the province.

Assistance was also provided by other government agencies, she said.

The PDRRMC of Guimaras is now continuously reaching out to villages of Guimaras to educate the residents on the effects of El Niño and how to prevent it. [via PNA]
