The municipality of Buenavista, Guimaras is a contender for the 2015 Presidential Award for Child-Friendly Municipalities and Cities that intends to recognize the important role of local government units in promoting and protecting children’s rights to survival, development, protection and participation.
Department of the Interior and Local Government in partnership with the Department of Social Welfare and Development confer the Seal of Child-Friendly Local Governance (SCFLG) to LGUs based on the results of the mandatory annual Child-Friendly Local Governance Audit.
The National Awards Committee of the Council for the Welfare of the Children (CWC) conducted the validation visit to Buenavista, the region’s winner for the 2015 SCFLG, in January this year. CWC spearheads the Presidential Award for Child-Friendly Municipalities and Cities.
DILG National Barangay Operations Office reported that out of 1,634 municipalities and cities nationwide, 1,439 or 88.07% were audited last year and 1,093 or 75.96% are eligible for SCFLG.
For the first to third class municipalities category of the PACFMC, Buenavista is pitted against Talibon in Bohol; Kalamansig in Sultan Kudarat and Roxas in Isabela.
Dumalneg in Ilocos Sur, Santa Margarita in Western Samar, Bayabas in Surigao del Sur, and Mahatao in Batanes were shortlisted for the fourth to sixth class municipalities category and Davao City, Bacolod City, Baguio City, and Mandaluyong City for the highly urbanized cities.
The contenders for the independent component cities for PACFMC are Cotabato City, Ormoc City, Dagupan City, and Santiago City.
Winners for each four categories will receive a Presidential trophy, citation and a cash prize of P500,000 to be used for projects for children sourced from the President’s Fund. Each national finalist will also be conferred a Presidential Plaque of Commendation.
