The European Union hopes to partake of the country’s sweetest mangoes found in the island province of Guimaras.
European Ambassador Franz Jessen together with German deputy ambassador Michael Hasper and Mihai Sion, Romanian Charge d’ Affaires met with officials of the Guimaras Mango Growers and Producers Development Cooperative, Friday.
Jessen said that the supply of mangoes in the European countries is low.
“The quality of mangoes is good and the price is okay. The demand will be there if the products come to the market,” he added.
Jessen also pointed out that European market is the biggest market in the world and the Philippines must export better than what it has achieved so far.
Jessen is also encouraging the said Guimaras Mango Cooperative to push for ‘Guimaras Mango’ as a Geographical Indication (GI) to increase the value of their products.
Data from the Provincial Agriculture Office shows that the Guimaras has 6,037.6 hectares planted with 274,822 mango trees. There are also 7,931 mango growers.
Provincial Agriculturist Ronnie Morante said that mango production has been continuously increasing from 7,714 metric tons in 2008 to 11, 839 metric tons in 2015.
In 2014, 14 metric tons were exported to other countries namely Singapore, Hongkong, Korea, Japan, United States of America and Australia. [via PNA]
