The Guimaras Electric Cooperative (Guimelco) anticipates that number of member-consumers in the island-province will continue increase in the coming years as Guimaras’ economy continues to improve.
Mayrou Espiña, OIC general manager, Guimelco, said the economy of Guimaras is booming, and with this development comes greater demand for power.
He cited requests for direct supply of electricity for a manufacturing firm in Jordan and a hotel in Nueva Valencia. A telecommunications network in Brgy Alubihod in Jordan is also requesting for a direct meter, he added.
Espiña said that peak demand in the province reached 6 megawatts last May.
Espiña said with the anticipated number of member-consumers, there’s a tendency that the power lines will be upgraded.
The present lines, some of which are setup as old as 37 years ago when the cooperative was created, is radial, “which means when one line trips, there’s an automatic blackout.”
He said when there are no reports of incidents that could have triggered the brownout, Guimelco’s maintenance crew will locate the cause, which takes time.
“But if an area’s line is looped, there are other portions of the line that can supply power in other areas, and the brownout is in a portion of an island not the whole island,” he said.Guimelco source its base load from Green Corp Geothermal Inc. in Negros Oriental.
The coop sources its peak load from TransAsia Oil and Energy Development Corporation (TOEDC). The renewal of the coop’s contract for peak load supply from TOEDC is pending before the Energy Regulation Commission (ERC).
It has also a pending application for a two-megawatt contract with Panay Energy Development Corporation (PEDC).
Aside from supply of peak load, Guimelco also contracted TOEDC for “island operation” wherein some areas in the province have power despite the blackout due to scheduled preventive maintenance of National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) or Guimelco.
Guimelco charges P12-P13 effective rate for residential consumers and P10-P12 for low-voltage consumers. [via PNA]
