Guimaras mango growers to supply more than 6 tons of mangoes in Manggahan Festival

Amid El Niño, it won’t run out of mangoes in the 2016 Manggahan Festival, assured the Guimaras Mango Growers Development Cooperative (GMGDC).

Rose Griesser, GMGDC president, said the 30-member cooperative will supply six tons or 6,350 kilos of the prized Guimaras mangoes during the island-province’s top and much-awaited tourism festival.

This will be subsidized by the province, she said.

Griesser said this is despite the prolonged drought which has been affecting the size and supply of mangoes in the island.

Unlike last year when there was an oversupply of mangoes, Griesser said mango trees produced lesser volume of fruits this year.

This is because the soil is hardened, and the lack of moisture reduced the sizes of fruit, she explained.

Ideally, a fruit should weigh at least 250 grams to make up four fruits in a kilo.

But this year, in a harvest of one ton, only 400 kilos weigh 200 grams to 250 grams and the remaining 600 kilos weigh about 160 grams each fruit.

Tourists look forward to Manggahan Festival, particularly to the mango eat-all-you-can wherein one can eat as much mangoes as one can for a very affordable price.

Over the years, the mango-eat-all-you-can has been attracting tourists, even the foreign ones like the Koreans.

Griesser said many are attracted to Guimaras mangoes because of its sweet-sour taste, thick pulp with less fiber.

The festival will open May 12 and runs until May 29. [via PNA]
