Guimaras bags Best PDRRMC award

The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) of Guimaras was adjudged as the best in Western Visayas  in the 2015 Gawad Kalasag awarding ceremony at Diversion 21 Hotel, Iloilo City on December 8.

Governor Samuel T. Gumarin, with PDRRMO officer Teresita Siason, received the award from Deputy Administrator Romeo Fajardo of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), OCD-6 regional director Rosario Cabrera and other regional directors of Regional DRRMC member-agencies.

Guimaras bested Capiz and Aklan, which placed second and third, respectively.

Siason said the PDRRMC proactively campaigns for disaster preparedness and resiliency among Guimarasons – in government offices, schools, businesses, and private institutions, with the support of the municipal governments and barangay councils.

“We have conducted several trainings and orientations on DRRM,” Siason said.

Some of the province’s best practices are the conduct of province-wide Fire-Safety and Rescue Olympics, institutionalization of barangay DRRMC, 24/7 rescue team, and an ordinance creating a separate DRRM, she said.

The provincial government also provided insurance to its DRRM volunteers, she added.

According to RDRRMC, Guimaras received a 92.30 percent rating; and cash incentive of Php50,000.

Gawad Kalasag (KAlamidad at Sakuna LAbanan, SAriling Galing ang Kaligtasan) is a search for excellence in DRRM and humanitarian assistance.

Started in 1998, it was conceived not only to recognize best DRRM practices but also to encourage stakeholders in crafting and implementing DRRM programs to protect communities against hazards. [via PNA]
